Be prepared and give yourself time to change habits – both mentally and physically – and the bowel to adapt to your new routines. You also need time to find your optimal treating parameters.
It is important to have realistic expectations of what TAI can do for you and how long it may take to achieve satisfactory results. A commitment of up to 4–12 weeks is necessary in order to stabilize the bowel and to develop a good individualized defecation routine.
Give it time. It is worth it!
Education and personalization is key to success in TAI, and comprehensive training is very important when you start. Ideally, your healthcare provider should guide you through your first session.
When performing TAI the colon needs to be air and water-tight. In patients with no sphincter control, the catheters must be equipped with a balloon to establish this.Among the devices with manual pump the main difference in terms of safety is the presence of a valve on the water storage bag cover. This valve opens when pressure exceeds potentially hazardous values for the colon.
An electronic pump guarantees low and constant air flow which allows the balloon to reach the right size with lower pressure inside, permitting better adaptability. This is the safest way to inflate the catheter balloon in patients with spinal cord injury.
An electronic device is also precise and independent from the manual pumping characteristics and offers further chances of preventing any improper use of the irrigation system.
If you would like to know more about the TAI therapy area, please contact your GP, healthcare professional or Bladder & Bowel clinic to discuss whether TAI is the right option for you.
The Navina™ Systems range of Transanal Irrigation solutions (TAI) from Wellspect Healthcare is now available on prescription.
