XIn many countries, having access to single-use catheters is natural, but in large parts of the world the possibility to perform Clean Intermittent Catheterisation (ISC) is extremely limited. Many young people with spinal cord injuries in poor countries die prematurely due to kidney failure. Hassan Balhas, a 34 year old man living in southern Lebanon, has been lucky. A group of friends from Norway provide him with regular shipments of LoFric, an aid that has changed his life and perhaps also saved it.
This is the story of Hassan and how self-catheterisation with LoFric has saved his life. Hassan lives in Lebanon and has a spinal cord injury from a shooting accident in 1989. After the accident, then 17-year-old Hassan was sentenced to a life at home, staying in his bed all day. His quality of life was very poor and his doctors did not have high hopes for him, they gave him only 5-10 years to live. After that, they thought that the health problems he suffered from as a consequence of the accident would lead him to a certain death.
Today, more than 25 years later, Hassan is leading an active life and is more alive and vigorous than ever. He is married to the lovely Maryam and they have a son together. All this has been made possible thanks to the catheterisation therapy and LoFric catheters.
This is a true story about love, sex and joie de vivre.
